You’re A Good Man, Bobby Liebling

    Thursday, March 19th, 2009

A couple weeks ago I went to Webster Hall to see 70s proto-metal band Pentagram perform. The crowd was a strange mix of the hip young Williamsburg chic crowd and unrepentant metalheads. Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” came on between sets, and I witnessed one large gentleman frantically play another large gentleman like a guitar for every section of the song. Reminding us that yes, there was a time in which people expressively GOT INTO the music.

When Pentagram took the stage, Bobby Liebling stepped out, sporting a ghoulish pallor and a psychedelic swingers’ party shirt. When he spoke, his was voice slowed by his Southern drawl and massive quantities of narcotics. Barely intelligible. Legend has it that Bobby Liebling has been on heroin since the mid 80s. It seems to have yielded that rare Keith-Richards-pickling effect on him. Though in 2005, Bobby apparently succumbed to an overdose while onstage and had to be carted away.

I will say this: the man is a pro. He must be at least 56 years old, addled by decades of drug use, and yet the man running all around the stage vamping it up like Rasptutin Gone Wild. When he sang he sounded no different than the 1972 studio recordings. Apparently there is a film about the man coming out soon.

    Episode 5 Production Notes

    Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Holyland USA is not the only attraction one can visit in scenic Waterbury, CT. You can also take a stroll down historic Hobo Alley or expand your mind at the Used Syringe Museum. Bob Crane of Hogan’s Heroes hails from there!

Episode 5 afforded me some interesting opportunities. First off, I got to shoot at the abandoned religious theme park known as Holyland USA. I visited the park a year ago and since then it has fallen apart even more. The park is apparently in the care of some nuns, although they were nowhere to be found. Our shoot was almost broken up by some intruders we thought were cops, but ended up being rowdy teens.

I also got to work the Spear of Destiny into the season arc. This was important because:
    a. I’m into that kind of nonsense
    b. a year and a half ago I spent $40 buying a Spear of Destiny replica on eBay and I need to justify that purchase

Wildman Bill Hind proved a worthy actor to play the role of the park’s holy caretaker gone mad. His role actually got him some other work. The song (”Hey Mr. Holy Man” by Kiss Inc, no relation to KISS) is not really available anywhere. Occasionally you can find a 45 of it on eBay, and I think the song might be on a compilation somewhere.

I later treated cast & crew to Sbarros at the Waterbury mall food court. It was kind of depressing. But I got to ride a sphinx!

Terry Reid - Still Keepin It Real

    Monday, February 23rd, 2009

We sent Plastic Tales correspondent and psych music expert Jay Corman on a mission to see Terry Reid. If you don’t know, Terry was famous for being the best male rock vocalist of his time. Even Aretha Franklin acknowledged his greatness. Terry was approached to be the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, as well as Deep Purple. He turned them both down.
Here’s one of Jay’s backstage photos:
